Farmstead cheese is a type of artisan cheese which is made traditionally with milk from the producer's own herds of cows, sheep, and goats.

Because the milk used by the producer can vary depending on the animal's diet, the season, and the weather, the composition and taste associated with a single producer's cheese is based on these factors. The flavors of the corn, grasses, and other feed plants grown in the producer's fields change throughout the year, causing the taste that comes through to be different in each batch, so each handmade batch of farmstead cheese is completely unique and unrepeatable. A farmstead cheese is unique to the farm, the cheese makers, and the animals that produce the milk, making each batch a one-of-a-kind sensory experience.
